CAPON BRIDGE, W.Va. (AP) — U.S. Secretary of the Interior Sally Jewell is visiting West Virginia to promote the outdoors.

Jewell is participating in Great American Backyard Campout with about 80 Girl Scouts from the region on Saturday. The campout will be at Camp White Lake in Capon Bridge.

The National Wildlife Federation coordinates the event to encourage people of all ages to camp and connect with nature.

In a blog post on the event, Jewell said some of her fondest childhood memories are camping out in the backyard with her friends.

She says giving children an opportunity to play outside, unstructured, feeds this curiosity, gets them moving, and builds confidence, comfort and appreciation the natural world.
