Girls Kick Off Event, Magnolia Claims Championship

Magnolia girls captured the Boggs Roundball Classic Championship with a hard fought 50-43 win over the Valley Lumberjills. In a game that Magnolia led from start to finish, three Lady Eagles hit for double figures to give them the victory. Kelsi Chapman led the way with 14 while Grace Berisford hit 12 and Peyton Ludwig knocked in 11 including three 3’s. Valley fell short with a fourth quarter comeback, but still managed to have three double digit scorers in Sophie Palmer 14, Madison Arnolds 13 and Erin Brown, who contributed 12. Arnolds also grabbed 10 rebounds for Valley

In Saturday’s consolation game for third place, Tyler edged out the girls from Clarksburg 51-49 on some last second free throws by senior point guard Katelyn Gogan. Notre Dame led most of the way and was ahead by six entering the last frame. Tyler’s pressure defense forced some turnovers and they started hitting to draw even with under a minute to play.

Vanessa Templeton hit a driving layup and a jumper from the wing while Ariel Fish put one back to make it 49-49. Gogan hit two clutch free throws in the last nine seconds to give the Lady Knights the win and third place in the tournament. Tyler now stands at 8-6 with an away game tomorrow at Magnolia before returning home on the 25th and 26th against Paden City and Williamstown.

Tyler’s Lady Knights took on Valley in the opening round of the high school girls’ division. Valley jumped out to a 17-13 first quarter lead and increased the margin at halftime to eight as they outscored the Lady Knights 10-6 in the second period.

Tyler Consolidated came back strong in the third frame 14-11 to pull to within five, but the Lumberjills took the last period 20-18 to come away with a 58-51 victory. Tyler fell to 7-6 for the season with the loss. Fish put on a strong performance scoring 12 points and hauling in seven boards. She was backed in the scoring by Kylie Martin with11, Templeton with nine and Aleah Black with seven and nine boards, plus two blocks.

Magnolia won the other first round game with a 68-59 win over Clarksburg N.D. Chapman scored 18 to lead the Blue Eagles, while Taylor Ludwig had 11 points and 10 assists. They moved onto play Valley in the championship game on Saturday. Tyler and Clarksburg N.D. moved to tangle in the consolation match also on Saturday.
