Magnolia’s boys won the annual Boggs Roundball Classic on Saturday with a 73-58 victory against the Valley Lumberjacks team. Magnolia started strong with Preston Boswell scoring the game’s first 11 points for the Blue Eagles. Valley fought back, however, and at the end of one quarter – it was 20-11 Magnolia. The Lumberjacks outscored the Blue Eagles 21-19 in the second frame and cut the lead to seven at the half.

A big third quarter by Magnolia raised the margin to 18 entering the fourth. Valley hit some big shots in the frame and managed to outscore the Blue Eagles by one in the quarter but it wasn’t enough as Boswell had his way and pumped in a game high 40 markers, giving him 70 for the two-day event.

In the consolation match the Silver Knights matched up against a good North Marion team who had fallen in the opening round to Magnolia. North Marion went ahead 37-19 at the half and increased its margin to 51-26 after three. The Silver Knights managed to win the fourth frame 18-8 and at one point, they cut the lead to 11 before the Huskies hit a couple of jumpers to again up the margin. Nathan Lancaster had a big night for the Knights as he dropped in 13 points and hauled down nine rebounds. He was aided in his efforts by Tyler West, who played a good floor game and hit for 12 points and had four steals. Tyler dropped to 2-11 for the year and will play on the road tomorrow against Williamstown.

Boys action in the Classic began on Friday night with a pair of games between Magnolia and North Marion along with Tyler Consolidated taking on Valley. Magnolia took the first contest against North Marion by a count of 73-45. Boswell led the way for the Blue Eagles with 30 points. Magnolia moved to 7-2 for the season with the win and advanced to Saturday’s championship game.

The second contest of the evening pitted the homestanding Silver Knights against Valley’s Lumberjacks in semifinal action. Valley jumped out early to an eight point first quarter lead and never looked back as they powered their way to a 74-55 win over the young and injury ridden Silver Knights. Quentin Richmond led the charge for the Knights with 17 points while hauling in a game high 19 rebounds. West backed up Richmond with 12 markers including a pair of three balls.

The Siver Knights were their own worst enemies as they turned the ball over 13 times and shot only 33 percent from the floor, hitting just four of 13 from beyond the arc. Valley had three players in double figures with Tucker Cain leading the way with a game high 25. Alex Midcap hit for 15 while Trey Streets pumped in 13. The Knights fell to 2-10 with the loss.
