Knights Slay Wirt County

By Staff | Jan 13, 2016

The Tyler Consolidated girls’ basketball team traveled to Wirt County on Thursday and came away with a 66-33 victory in girls’ basketball action. The Lady Knights wasted no time and jumped out to a 17-7 first quarter lead and increased it to 37-16 at halftime.

Aleah Black and Amanda Reynolds led the way with 12 points each followed by eight by Vanessa Templeton and seven each from Katelyn Gogan and Freshman JoLee Walton. Ariel Fish chipped in with six and the Knights went onto outscore the home team 29-17 in the second half to secure the victory.

Martha Shepherd tossed in three points as did Joralda Rice. Kara Dalrymple knocked in four points and had six rebounds, while Autumn Wells and Josey Jones both hit four two.

The Lady Knights then traveled to St. Mary’s on Friday to play the number three ranked team in Class A in West Virginia. The Knights started out running and gunning and held St. Mary’s without a field goal the first quarter to take a 9-4 lead after one. The Knights were up 11-5 when St. Mary’s went on a 20-4 run that was the result of some good Blue Devil three-point shooting and turnovers by the Knights. Coach Boggs said she was happy with her teams early defense.

“We usually run a trapping defense, but tonight we decided to play them straight up and get in the shooters face,” she said.

That wasn’t enough though as St. Mary’s All-Stater Ashley Hall started knocking down the long ball and forcing Tyler to extend it’s defense resulting in some easy buckets down low. Katelyn Gogan, who had injured her ankle Thursday night at Wirt and was questionable for Friday, came on and led the Knights in scoring with 14 points. She also played solid defense with six steals and nine rebounds. Tyler Consolidated played even with the Blue Devils in the second half, but couldn’t overcome the woes of the second quarter and the Blue Devils came away with a 59-45 victory.

Hall Led all scorers in the game with 27 points. Backing up Goan for the Lady Knights were Ariel Fish with seven and Aleah Black with six. Amanda Reynold and Josey Jones both drained four while Peyton Kocher and Vanessa Templeton tossed in three each. JoLee Walton and Joralda Rice each had a bucket. The Lady Knights now stand at 7-5 on the season and are ranked at 13th in the state. Their next home game will be on Jan. 14, against Valley and again on the 16th in the Tyler Roundball Classic.

Tyler’s Lady Knights came out on top of the Blue Devils in the JV game as JoLee Walton a promising freshman poured in 17 with some fine hustle moves around the bucket. She also collared 11 rebounds. She was backed in the scoring by another freshman Josey Jones, who added 15 to the cause. Cora Grimm dropped in seven and Payton Kocher scored six as the Knights came away with a 70-58 win.
