For the third year in a row, the After-School Choir and Percussion Ensemble at Arthur I. Boreman Elementary School was selected as state honors finalists for the West Virginia Music Educators Association’s (WVMEA) Solo and Ensemble Festival.

On Feb. 4, the group from AIB participated in Solo and Ensemble with all six of their pieces receiving superior ratings. The group also received state honors nominations.

After submitting recordings of each of these pieces to a special judging committee, one of their pieces, “Jamaica Jazz,” was selected as an honors finalist. This piece was performed on Orff barred instruments accompanied by bongos and claves. Because they were awarded this distinction, students in this ensemble from AIB were invited to perform at a special recital held for all of the Solo and Ensemble finalists in the state.

The Solo and Ensemble honors recitals occur over two evenings during the WVMEA state conference. Over 40 instrumental, vocal, piano, and string solos and ensembles were selected. As has been the case for the last three years, the After-School Choir and Percussion Ensemble at Arthur I. Boreman was the only elementary ensemble selected to perform. Members of this ensemble performed for a large audience in the Little Theatre in the Charleston Civic Center during the WVMEA state conference on March 13.
