DAWSON

(Rev. Bill Dawson is public information officer of the Sistersville Volunteer Fire Department and pastor of the Sistersville First United Methodist Church)

I would like to take this opportunity to thank the community for honoring our local heroes during our "Heroes Day" Parade and for attending the activities at the Sistersville City Park on Sept. 7.

I would also like to thank the following businesses and individuals for their help and support to make this day a memorable event for the community of Sistersville: Sistersville City Council and Mayor; Sistersville General Hospital; Sistersville Park and Pool Committee; Sistersville Volunteer Fire Company; Sistersville Chief of Police Ben Placer and the Sistersville Police Department; New Martinsville Police Department for bringing their K-9; Wetzel County Sheriff K-9 unit; Air Evac Lifeteam, New Martinsville; Officer Neil Fowlkes of the WV Department of Highway Safety/Wheeling Police Department; West Virginia Division of Forestry and Smokey Bear; WV State Police; Paden City Volunteer Fire Company, VFW Post 6327; Tyler County Office of Emergency Management; American Legion Post 67; local law enforcement for safety and traffic support; Alex King, Valerie Northcraft, Pastor Larry Bayle of the Friendly Baptist Church, Cathy Post, Judy Light of The Tyler Star News; Daniel Tyson of INNformer; Jim and Jan Surface; Tracy Heintzman; Barbara Vincent; Sistersville First United Methodist Church; Delegate Roger Romine; Senator Joe Manchin and staff; Senator Larry Edgell; and Governor Earl Ray Tomblin.

I want to thank Mike Daugherty of Mr. Mikes Comedy (Clarksburg, W.Va.) for coming and participating in our parade and for performing at the park. His participation was made possible by donations from the following businesses and individuals: The Wells Inn, Diana and Gene Rice, Beri Fox, and Al and Darlene Morgan. Again, your help was greatly appreciated. Mr. Mike's Comedy show brought lots of laughter and many smiles to the faces of young and old alike.

In addition to all those previously mentioned, a special "thank you" goes out to all others who gave up their time to participate in the parade/city park activities. This also includes those citizens who attended the day's events, showing their respect and thankfulness to our local heroes. Some of our local hero parade participants included: Our local Veterans, American Legion Riders, American Legion Auxiliary, Middlebourne VFD, Shirley VFD, St. Marys Police Department, Wetzel County Sheriff Department, NMPD, Clarksburg City Police Department, TCOEM, Division of Corrections, and the NMVFD.

I would like to specifically acknowledge and show my personal appreciation to all members of our area fire departments and law enforcement agencies, as well as to our local EMS organizations. Finally, I would like to thank all of our "Heroes Day" guests of honor for their participation in the day's activities as well as for their constant, daily support, and service to our local communities.

If I missed any others who participated in and/or assisted with the day's activities, I am truly sorry. There were so many people who helped or offered to help in one way or another. Your offers were extremely appreciated, and your assistance did not go unnoticed.

"Heroes Day" was a great way to honor the memory of those who lost their lives on 9/11/01, as well as simultaneously giving due recognition to those people who currently serve within our communities today.

If you would like to volunteer with and/or give support to your local fire department, ambulance service, or law enforcement agency, please contact them and learn how you, too, can make a positive difference within your local community.

Once again, I am grateful for having the opportunity to showcase our deserving, local first responders ... our local heroes!
