Paden City Labor Day Celebration fills weekend

By Staff | Aug 27, 2014

RAFFLE -- Paden City Garden Club at the Labor Day Celebration will be selling chances on a boys 18-inch bicycle. Pictured above is a young lad, Killian Billiter, who deemed the bicycle a really great bike! The bike was generously donated by Wal-Mart, New Martinsville store. Chances will be sold on the bike at the duck pond operated by the Paden City Garden Club.

A weekend full of fun and good music is on tap for the annual Paden City Labor Day Celebration to be held Friday through Monday on Main Street.

Singer/Songwriter Keith Anderson will bring his country music, including no doubt hit “XXL”, to the stage Sunday night at 9 p.m.

His debut CD, “Three Chord Country and American Rock & Roll”, was certified Gold and garnered two Top 10 hits (accompanied by two No. 1 music videos), “Pickin’ Wildflowers,” and “Every Time I Hear Your Name,” along with two Top 30 hits “XXL” and “Podunk”. This success prompted music trades Billboard and Radio & Records to name him country music’s No. 1 New Male Artist of 2005 and the top new solo country artist of the year.

But his writing credits may be even more impressive, most notably “Lost In This Moment”, the No. 1 smash for Big and Rich which garnered him a CMA and ACM Song of the Year nomination.

But Anderson’s show doesn’t only please the ears, but also the eyes-at least of female attendees. Anderson was named one of People Magazine’s “50 Hottest Bachelors”, and Men’s Fitness Magazine’s, “Ultimate Country Star”.

Fans of the Statler Brothers may be familiar with Monday evening’s entertainment. Jimmy Fortune, a member of the ever-favorite Statler Brothers band for 21 years, will take the stage at 8 p.m.

Fortune wrote the group’s second No. 1 hit, “Elizabeth” and followed that with the number one hits “My Only Love” and “Too Much On My Heart”. Fortune also co-wrote “More Than a Name on the Wall”. When Fortune sings “More Than A Name On The Wall” he always pays tribute to our veterans. When performing this year at Paden City’s Labor Day festivities, he will make special mention of Private Jerry Eddy who was killed in action in Vietnam on Aug. 26, 1966, eight days after his 20th birthday. Jerry was a 1964 graduate of Paden City and the only casualty of that war from Paden City.

DeWayne Spaw has been a favorite performer at the local festival and this year is no different. The country crooner will take the stage Monday at 5 p.m. and, before that, hopefully thrill those along the parade route by singing from the top of his tour vehicle, as he has in years past.

However, Organizer Susan Wade says this may be the last year the festival hosts the singer, as he says he will be cutting back on his touring. That makes it even more important that locals catch his Monday show.

Other stage entertainment during the weekend includes Pete Lauderman, 6:30 p.m., and Monkey Farm, 8 p.m., on Friday.

Saturday afternoon will cater to the kids and the young at heart as Balloonovations, Miranda Rogers, will offer up her amazing inflated creations at 3 p.m. Her father, Bill Stokes, will bring his magic show to the stage at 5 p.m.

The always popular One-A-Chord will take the stage at 6:30 p.m., followed by replay at 8:30 p.m.

Sunday’s entertainment is John Ice, 1 p.m.; Days Later, 3 p.m.; Kaydon Hardman, 6 p.m.; Cross Creek, 7:15 p.m.; and Keith Anderson, 9 p.m.

Of course the Paden City Labor Day Celebration is much more than just stage entertainment. The kids will be pleased to bounce, jump, run and just generally enjoy the Fun Factory inflatables. They will be free on Friday night, but will require a wristband purchase the rest of the long weekend. There will also be some games by local organizations such as the fish pond, dime pitch, and dunking booth, as well as crafts and Bingo.

The big event on Monday is the parade up state Route 2 at 1 p.m. But the day begins even earlier when the Paden City Volunteer Fire Company sponsors their famous all-you-can-eat breakfast for $6 at the fire hall from 8 a.m. until noon. The menu includes scrambled eggs, bacon, sausage links, and patties, pancakes, french toast, sausage gravy, biscuits, fruit salad, toast, coffee, milk, chocolate milk, apple juice, and orange juice. For more information, call the fire hall at 304-337-9289.

The Paden City Volunteer Fire Company Women’s Auxiliary will sponsor fish fries at the fire hall on Sunday, 1-6 p.m., and Monday, 2-6 p.m. The menu includes fish sandwiches, french fries, baked beans, cole slaw, and desserts. For more information, call 304-337-9289. American Legion Auxiliary Unit 86 will have food available and the PCVFC’s concession trailer will be open all weekend.
