Tuning in the Summer Knights

By Staff | Jul 23, 2014

The Summer Knights team kept WRSG up and running all summer. Pictured from left are: Danny Grimm, Taylor Gilmore, Supervisor Greg Goodfellow, Kaytlyn Henthorn, and Brandon Wise. The station is currently accepting sponsors and contributions from interested businesses, organizations, and individuals in order to continue their unique programming at the school.

There is more to learn at Tyler Consolidated High/Middle School than reading, writing, and arithmetic . . . there’s also working the operation boards at the school’s radio station, WRSG 91.5, disc jockeying the afternoon set, preparing and recording the daily weather and news reports, and getting playlists ready for the ever growing listening audience.

It’s summer time and the Summer Knights are on.

Well, they were on. The summer program allowing students the opportunity to learn the workings of a radio station from the inside out, ended last week. A small group of students have worked diligently along with the supervisor of the program, Greg Goodfellow, throughout the summer bringing updated weather and news reports, and music of every genre to listeners of WRSG.

“We have had a great group of students in here this summer,” Goodfellow said. “They have been very conscientious about their work, have learned a lot about the operations, and, I think, have had a good time.”

“We have a small group, but they have done a fantastic job. I can step out of the room and not have to worry about things getting done properly because they all know what they are doing and keep the ball rolling with or without me overseeing them. It’s a great feeling to know they not only have learned, but are putting that knowledge to practical use. I’m so proud of them.”

The Summer Knights staff for the summer includes fifth grader Haley Tuttle; seventh graders Kaytlyn Henthorn and Anna Grimes; eighth graders Brandon Wise, Destry Nelson, and Sierra Wright; freshman, Taylor Gilmore; and senior, Danny Grimm.

“It’s been great,” said Grimm, who is in his second year as a volunteer for the program. “I really enjoy being on the air.”

Grimm, who disc jockeys a spot on the station as “Dan the Man”, says he’s enjoyed his time at the station and working with the other students.

Freshman Taylor Gilmore agreed, “I have a wonderful time here,” she said. “I’ve made some really good friends, and this might be something I’m interested in for the future, so everything I’m learning is a plus.”

Unique programming, local weather and news, sports, live events, and school news are what makes WRSG station a favorite among Tyler County residents. The school station operates from two transmitters, one of which is down at the present time but is expected to be repaired in the very near future.

“We love our audience and are always so appreciative of them and their input to help us do a better job here,” Goodfellow said. “Community support is so very important to us. We are extremely reliant on businesses and individuals to back us and appreciate all the support we can get.”

The station is always looking for sponsors and contributors in order to be more self sufficient. Interested businesses, organizations, and individuals can contact the station at 304-758-9007 during school hours or via their Facebook page to offer support and assistance.

WRSG (91.5 FM) is a non-commercial high school radio station, owned by Tyler Consolidated High School and licensed to the Tyler County Board of Education. The station was assigned the WRSG call letters by the Federal Communications Commission on July 3, 2000.
