Heavy hearts

By Staff | Jul 16, 2014

Maybe it’s exacerbated by the fact that we just finished the obituary page, but we put this week’s Tyler Star News “to bed” with heavy hearts.

It just seems that the feeling of sadness permeates this issue. The tragic loss of a child in a fire on Big Run is almost beyond comprehension. It leaves us angry, confused, and just plain sad.

The obituaries tell the stories of some wonderful lives cut too short.

While many of you no doubt remember David Ice from his days growing up in Sistersville, we remember him as the state’s Secretary of Education and the Arts under Gov. Cecil B. Underwood. During his visits to Tyler County during that tenure, Ice always had a smile on his face and concern in his heart for his hometown.

Obviously, if you read Sports Writer Judy Light’s column on page 10, you’ll see that we also have a special connection to Stephen Billings. His loss has shaken his family and, in turn, Judy’s extended family at the Tyler Star News.

Then there is the dedication of the bridge for Staff Sgt. Jess Adam Ault. While the event was certainly an honorable one, it brings back the emotions of the day when his family and then Tyler County learned of his passing.

Yeah, we’re just a bit melancholy around here this week. As much as we try to stay positive, sometimes the news just gets to you.
