Fourth annual Knight Jr. Golf Camp is held

The 2014 Tyler Consolidated High School Knights Junior Golf Camp was held the evenings of June 16-18 at the Sistersville Country Club. Twenty boys and girls attended the three-day camp, designed for those who will be entering third through eighth grade in the fall.

"We had another very successful golf camp," commented golf camp directors Joe Griffith and David Tucker, who are the Silver Knight Golf coaches.

"Several of the golfers had attended camp in previous years, but many of those in attendance were new to the game. We know that every one of them learned something about the game of golf that they had not known before."

Students attending the camp rotated among three skills stations: putting, chipping, and driving. Then the older players went out on the course in small groups and played several holes under the direction of an instructor.

Golf rules and etiquette on the course were also addressed.

Griffith added, "Golf is a sport that can be hard for a young boy or girl to get into, unless someone from their family plays. So the Junior Golf Camp is a good way for them to gain a little exposure to the game."

"I know that the kids really enjoyed the three nights. One boy even said that it was his favorite game because you get to hit a ball with a stick!"

The high school golfers at Tyler Consolidated helped run the camp, and members of the Sistersville Country Club served as instructors for the golf camp.

"Once again this year, we had an impressive squad of instructors. As in past years, I was very pleased with the instruction that the kids received at the camp," Griffith commented.

Students attending the 2014 Knights Golf Camp included: Nathan Barker, Zade Billings, Davin Brown, Grady Brown, Ty Cain, Ryan Campbell, Nate Cooper, Anna Griffith, Jesse Griffith, Preston Grimes, Jacob Harper, Jackson Kibbey, Sage Landis, Garrett Littell, Haiden Placer, Zack Slie, Neal Soles, Latisha Thomas, Avery West, and Evan Wise.

Instructors included: Rob Amos, Chris Byers, Jim Hammel, Curtis Heintzman, Bill McCoy, and Doug Miller.

"Chris Byers acted as the Country Club organizer for the instructors," Griffith said.

"Chris filled the shoes of Tim Miller, who passed away recently."

"Tim was very instrumental in getting the golf camp going four years ago when we first started, and we really missed having him as an instructor this year."

"My thanks go to the Sistersville Country Club for providing this great opportunity for the kids of our area to learn how to play golf."

"Coach Tucker and I hope to be able to offer the golf camp again in 2015."
