The Middlebourne Parks and Recreation Department with support from the Stealey Green Community Grant hosted a soccer camp for students ages five to 12 at the Stealey Green Community Center June 16 through the 19.
Twenty-three 5-8 year olds participated in the morning session that ran from 9-11:30 a.m. and thirteen 9-12 year olds turned out for the afternoon session that ran from 1-3:30 p.m.
Because of the dangerous heat and humidity, the camp sessions were cut back to two and a one half hours. Youngsters from AIB and SES participated in SPARK drills, lead-up games and modified game play to develop their soccer skills.
Campers were assisted by student volunteers from Tyler Consolidated High School, Sarah Davis and Tyler Consolidated Middle School, Taylor Ebert.
Kidpower Camp Director, Charlene Galluzzo, was pleased with the turnout and skill development of the campers.
"I think the kids had fun and you could definitely see their development from the first to the last day of camp," said Galluzzo.
"A big thank you to the parents who pitched in to help with drills and bring cold treats for the kids."
Campers can eat breakfast and lunch for free at Tyler Consolidated through the summer feeding program. Hours are: breakfast from 8-9 a.m. and lunch 11:15 a.m. - 12:30 p.m.
The next camp session is basketball and will be held at the Stealey Green Community Center from June 30 - July 3.
Other camps offered this summer are: volleyball camp, July 7-11; and Tennis Camp, July 14-17.
Children ages 5-8 attend the morning session and 9-12 year old students attend the afternoon session.
Registration forms are available at local merchants in Middlebourne, or by calling Charlene Galluzzo at 304-758-4266. Students can also be registered on the first day of the camp session.
