From Daughters of the American Revolution

By Staff | May 14, 2014

Dear Editor,

The Ohio Valley Chapter, Daughters of the American Revolution, members would like to take this opportunity to say a heartfelt “Thank You” to all the men and women who served during the Vietnam War, whether it was in Vietnam, other countries around the world, or within the borders of the United States. You all served your country with courage and integrity and we are proud of you for your service. As we all know, freedom is not free and some had to pay the ultimate price. The dedication of the three Honor Walls in St. Marys, Sistersville, and New Martinsville were in honor of all the veterans and their families to let them know they are appreciated and not forgotten.

We would like to thank all the veterans, families, friends, and members of the local VFW, American Legions, and AMVETS for their help in the gathering of the names of the Vietnam Veterans to be put on the walls so we could honor the service of all the veterans who served from 1956-1975. We would also like to thank the members of the Patriot Guard who were part of all three ceremonies in St. Marys, Sistersville, and New Martinsville. A special thank you to the following people who participated in the ceremonies: AMVETS Honor Guard, Sistersville VFW/ American Legion Honor Guard, New Martinsville American Legion Honor Guard, Senator Donna Boley, Delegate Roger Romine, Robert Villers, Alyssa Petroplus, Kent Leonhardt, Mayor Paul Ingram, Mayor Kay Larson, Mayor John Hopkins, Julie Henegar, Dan Grimm, and Cedar Sands.

Many of the local high school students helped with the construction of the honor walls. Many members of the Ohio Valley Chapter worked to construct the walls and make preparations for the ceremonies in each county and we thank them for their assistance.

If you have any additions or corrections to the list of names that are being kept, please contact Frannie Weekley at 304-652-2915. She will see that the names are added to the books that were made for each county. We would like to honor all our hometown Vietnam Veterans who served between 1956-1975 by making our list of veterans as complete as possible.
