Tyler County Superintendent of Schools Robin Daquilante briefed the Board of Education April 8 about the county's excellent showing at Arts Alive.
The annual event, sponsored by the West Virginia Department of Education, was held April 4 at the Clay Center in Charleston, W.Va.
The A.I. Boreman Elementary School Choir opened the show and performed three songs on their instruments. "That's quite an honor," said Daquilante. "It's the second time Boreman's choir has been invited to participate there."

Jessica Bland, one of Joe Semple's art students, recently won the Sargent Art Award for West Virginia. "This is the biggest award presented to a visual arts student during Arts Alive," said Daquilante. For winning the award Bland will get a free trip to New York City, along with one of her parents and Semple.

Another accolade Daquilante mentioned was Hope Stewart being named an EQT Student of Excellence Scholarship winner. She is the daughter of Connie and Harley Stewart, both employees of Tyler County Schools. Her activities include National Honor Society, 4-H, FFA, and more. She is active with community service as well, particularly through the Olive Branch Animal Reserve.
Daquilante also told the board the school has secured a grant in the amount of $3,600 for archery in the schools, through the efforts of two teachers who worked together on the project.
The superintendent also presented the board with the results of the FFA Ham and Bacon Show and the 2013-2014 Golden Horseshoe winners: Ted Stackpole, Rosanna Smith, and Colby Buchanan.
After a 23-minute executive session, the board agreed with the recommendation to expel a student for 365 days.
Upon returning to regular business, the board approved the Tyler Consolidated High School 2014 Varsity Volleyball and 2014 JV Volleyball schedules.
The following trip requests were also approved: Dawn Knowlton to take the Sistersville Elementary School second grade class to the Oglebay Good Zoo on May 9, with bus for transportation. At the request of Tricia Feldmeier, AIB principal, the board granted permission for the AIB fifth grade class to attend Farm Safety Day at the Tyler County Fair Grounds on May 21, no bus required. Matthew Jennings, AIB Music specialist, was given permission to take the AIB choir and percussion ensemble to perform at the Art Alive event at the Clay Center in Charleston on April 4. Natasha Richardson, Tyler County Extension Agent, is allowed to take 4-H students to accompany FFA members on the bus to Jackson's Mill on April 11 to participate in the WV Beef Expo cattle evaluation and stockman's contest.
Other requests approved were: Kim Loudin to use the Tyler Consolidated High School auditorium and band room to hold a gymnastics/ dance recital on May 30 and 31; Elizabeth AL-Janaby for her children, Saleh AL-Janaby, Zayd AL-Janaby, and Adala AL-Janaby, to be permitted to cross county lines in order to continue attending Tyler County Schools for the 2014-2015 school year, pending approval from Wetzel County Board of Education; Joyce Haggerty, permission to use Connie Stewart's room and the Tyler Consolidated cafeteria area to hold a spaghetti dinner to benefit Relay for Life on April 24 and 25; Jason Maisey to use six classrooms and two parking lots for the Tyler and Wetzel Fireman's Association to hold a fire school on May 16, 17, and 18; Melinda Walton permission for the 14 and under Tyler County Softball League to use the softball field on Sundays in April and May for practices; Joberta White permission to use the Sistersville Elementary School cafeteria, gym, music room, and restrooms on Aug. 2, to hold the West Virginia Oil and Gas Festival Pageant.
The board accepted Jana Thomas's resignation as the National Honor Society Advisor and Community Service Chair for Tyler Consolidated High School, effective at the end of the 2013-14 school year.
