ARTISTS ARE RECOGNIZED -- Art students at Tyler Consolidated High School get creative for a group photo at the Arts Alive program sponsored by the West Virginia Department of Education in Charleston last week. Photos from the group’s exhibit and the story can be found on page 12.

Tyler County Superintendent of Schools Robin Daquilante briefed the Board of Education April 8 about the county’s excellent showing at Arts Alive.

The annual event, sponsored by the West Virginia Department of Education, was held April 4 at the Clay Center in Charleston, W.Va.

The A.I. Boreman Elementary School Choir opened the show and performed three songs on their instruments. “That’s quite an honor,” said Daquilante. “It’s the second time Boreman’s choir has been invited to participate there.”

Jessica Bland, one of Joe Semple’s art students, recently won the Sargent Art Award for West Virginia. “This is the biggest award presented to a visual arts student during Arts Alive,” said Daquilante. For winning the award Bland will get a free trip to New York City, along with one of her parents and Semple.

Another accolade Daquilante mentioned was Hope Stewart being named an EQT Student of Excellence Scholarship winner. She is active with community service as well, particularly through the Olive Branch Animal Reserve.

Daquilante also told the board the school has secured a grant in the amount of $3,600 for archery in the schools, through the efforts of two teachers who worked together on the project.

The superintendent also presented the board with the results of the FFA Ham and Bacon Show and the 2013-2014 Golden Horseshoe winners: Ted Stackpole, Rosanna Smith, and Colby Buchanan.

After a 23-minute executive session, the board agreed with the recommendation to expel a student for 365 days.

Upon returning to regular business, the board approved the Tyler Consolidated High School 2014 Varsity Volleyball and 2014 JV Volleyball schedules.
