Sisters roll out the red carpet in March

By Staff | Feb 26, 2014

The Cutsy sisters, Beth Willey and Brenda Casey, enjoy a past Sisters Fest that had a “Wild West, Sisters Fest” theme.

Sisters Fest is ready to roll out the red carpet for their 15th annual event, March 14 and 15 in Sistersville.

An event for sisters or simply close friends, Sisters Fest is an annual weekend for women age 16 and older to get together and have some fun. It’s kind of a like a great big slumber party for adults. There is food, music, dancing, lip synching, and more laughter then you can imagine. Oh, and there is bickering too-after all, when sisters get together there is always some of that involved.

But hopefully the sisters can keep themselves from acting like Joan Rivers at the Oscars when they stroll down the red carpet on Saturday evening. Why red carpet? Because that is this year’s theme. Think of the red carpet at the Oscars, the Grammys, or even the Country Music Awards. It is designed to be a grand event full of fun and laughter.

While the theme is fancy, organizers remind attendees that really just about any kind of attire is fine. Some “sisters” really get into the theme each year, dressing up for the entire weekend. Some make and wear matching t-shirts. Still others just wear whatever their hearts desire.

The costumes always hit their height for the annual banquet held on Saturday evening. Usually the women parade down Charles and Wells streets, but given the theme, organizers thought the women my be wearing high heels and not want to stroll so far. So for a change the women will be meeting outside the Elks for a group picture at 6:30 p.m., then going down the red carpet to the Elks Ballroom.

Sisters Fest invites the public to come watch the promenade, much the same way they would at the local high school proms. Organizers hope to give the walk a sense of authentic grandeur.

The banquet will begin at 7 p.m. and catered, buffet style, by Quinet’s Court Restaurant. The banquet will conclude with recognition of contest winners and door prizes.

Seats to this event go fast, so pre-registration is encouraged to ensure a seat. The cost of the banquet is $15 and attendees are also asked to bring two quarters to the event.

Pre-registration is encouraged and may be required to ensure a place at the banquet. As another incentive for early registration, all persons with registrations in by March 1 will be entered into a drawing for a prize of $100 cash.

The cost to attend Sisters Fest is done on an a la carte basis with all attendees required to pay a $10 registration fee. After that the fee is based on what events sisters want to attend. The appetizer contest, variety show, and game show are included in the registration, but additional charges are levied for breakfast, $6; luncheon, $10; and banquet, $15. Two other events, which are on a pay-at-the-door basis are a Bingo to benefit the Sistersville General Hospital Relay for Life, $10 for 10 games and $5 for coverall; and scrapbook class, $10, please bring photos with you.

Sisters Fest begins Friday night at 6 p.m. with an appetizer and dessert contest in the Elks Ballroom. Attendees are encouraged to bring their best appetizer or dessert, along with one copy of the recipe if they would like to share it, for their fellow Sisters Fest participants to taste and vote on their favorites. First through third places are awarded in each category and an additional prize is given for the best theme food. New this year, as an added incentive, each entry in the contest will be entered into a drawing to win $25.

A perennial favorite, but on a different day, the extremely popular “How Well Do You Know Your Sister?” game show will be held Friday at 7 p.m. in the Elks ballroom. This event, similar to The Newlywed Game, always elicits laughter as sisters and friends reveal secrets and bicker over the right answers. The winners get the coveted crowns and reign over the annual event.

As always on Friday evening and throughout the weekend, Sisters Fest attendees are welcome to spend some time in the Elks bar. However, some women in the past have expressed a desire for a late-night alternative. So this year after the variety show there will a time for game playing and practice for the variety show that will be held Saturday at 3:30 p.m.

Saturday’s events begin with breakfast from 9 to 10 a.m. At 10 a.m. the benefit Bingo will begin in the Elks Ballroom.

A luncheon will be served at the Sistersville Country Club from noon to 1:30 p.m. Chauffeurs will be available from the Wells Inn, if rides are needed. Sistersville Lions Club women will be preparing a wonderful spread for this event.

Create a scrapbook of “sister” memories at a special class to be held from 1:30-3 p.m. Then from 3:30-5 p.m. is the ever-popular variety show. “This has become a favorite for the fun-loving “sisters” who enjoy laughing at the wide variety of acts who are brave enough to take the stage,” said Betsy Westfall, a committee member. “It’s just an all-out fun time when the ladies get creative and entertain their friends-even ones they haven’t met yet!”
