Basketball season continues for ladies

January 8, 2014
Tyler Star News

The local high school girls basketball teams are facing as much trouble with their schedules as the boys are with cancellations due to weather, causing upheavals and last minute changes to set games.

Both the Paden City and Tyler Consolidated ladies continue to strive for positive results at the end of every contest.

The Lady 'Cats gave the Irish of St. John Central all they wanted as the two played a close and tight game, resulting in the third loss of the season for the Wildcats, 51-47.

Senior Myah Charkawi double-doubled on the day for the Lady Wildcats with 24 points and 13 rebounds. She also had two steals in the mix. Cydney Blatt scored eight points and had nine rebounds, seven steals, five blocks and two assists; Hannah Stanley, eight points, three rebounds, three assists and two steals; Kayla Hizer, one point, seven rebounds; and Kayla Barker, two rebounds and a steal.

The Lady 'Cats season win/loss record stands at 3-3 at this point of the season.

The team is scheduled to host Williamstown on Jan. 13 at 6 p.m.

Lady Knights

The Lady Knights faced off with the Lady Eagles of Magnolia in New Martinsville on Dec. 28 in a hard fought battle, only to be handed their fourth loss of the season, 71-60 when all was said and done.

The highlight of the game for the Silver Ladies was senior Sydney Reed's game high 30 points and 10 rebounds to lead the team.

Reed, the leading scorer in West Virginia High School Girls Basketball this season, has been putting up between 25-30 points every game this season.

"Syd's really been on this year," said Lady Knight Head Coach Matt Kinnard. "She adds a whole other dimension to our team. Other coaches know that Sydney can score and they've been preparing their defenses to shut her down, but she finds a way to score. We're extremely proud of her."

"This is her year."

The Lady Knights will travel to St. Marys on Jan. 9 and to Parkersburg Catholic on Jan. 14 before taking part in the Boggs Roundball Classic at home on Jan. 16-18.
