The Silver Knights enter the stadium

The Homecoming game at Tyler Consolidated High School on Sept. 27 turned out to be perfect for the Silver Knight football team as well as their fans as the team tasted victory for the time in 2013. The Silver Knights put together an excellent first half to hand the loss to the Calhoun Red Devils, 43-6.

“It wasn’t always pretty, but a win is a win and we’ll take it,” said head coach of the Silver Knights, Ryan Walton.

“Our kids were prepared and did what they were supposed to do for the most part, to get the win. I’m glad we were able to get the W, that’s what they’ve worked for so hard this whole season. It’s a motivation builder.”

Tyler Consolidated took little time in putting the first score of the evening on the scoreboard as senior powerhouse Jacob Highley pushed his way down the field 28 yards to score six points with 9:51 to play in the first quarter. The two point conversion was ran in by Cole Kocher.

Just as Calhoun started to put together their offense, Kocher changed their plans, intercepting the ball and taking it 42 yards straight down the field for the second Knight touchdown in less than 30 seconds. The point after kick put the Silver in the lead, 15-0.

The Knight defense held their end up by stopping the Red Devils march down field to see sophomore Jordan Baker take the ball 49 yards for a TD. Baker then passed off to #25 for the two point conversion.

Scoring 23 points in the first period gave the home team some breathing space, but before the first half ended, the team found yet another way to score with Josh Ruble running in five yards for six points and then kicking the extra point to put the score at 30-0 at the half-time break.

Before the third period could end, senior Skyler Leasure got the nod for end zone territory as he ran in four yards for a Knight TD.

The visitors made a notch on their side of the scoreboard in the third as they connected on a 25 yard pass for six, their only score of the evening.

The final score of the game came courtesy of Ruble again, as he took the hand-off 23 yards in for the touchdown, and again, sealed the deal with the extra point kick, capping off the scoring at 46-6.

“We were able to spread the ball around and let more of the guys share the responsibility,” Walton said. “We still have some things to work on, but a little success will hopefully make them hungry for more.”

The Knights were penalized 15 times for 120 yards in the game, while the Red Devils got caught nine times, costing them 75 yards.

Consolidated had a total of 16 first downs in the game to Calhouns, 10. The Silver had a total of 456 rushing yards on 51 carries while Calhoun collected 145 yards on 44 carries.

Senior Swen Scheidemantel pulled down a 37 yard pass and Knight quarterback, Jordan Baker, completed two of six passes for 77 yards in the game.

Senior Jacob Highley led all Knight rushers in yards in the contest with 121 on eight carries and one TD. Jordan Baker had eight rushes for 101 yards and one touchdown; Skyler Leasure, 10 carries for 54 yards and one touchdown; Josh Ruble, 67 yards on nine rushes, two TD’s ; Anderson, five carries for 50 yards; and Jace Reed gained 23 yards on five carries.

On Friday the Silver Knights will host Buffalo at Knight Stadium, looking for their second win.

“We can’t sit back and just think it will come easy,” the coach said. “They have a running back that is very elusive and their main weapon. We have to be prepared and stay prepared if we want to continue to see success.” Game time is set for 7 p.m.
