Ladies win over Magnolia

It was a good week for Lady Knight soccer last week as the team got their first win of the season in a big way, over Magnolia, 5-1.

In New Martinsville on Sept. 10, Consolidated and the Lady Blue Eagles were pretty evenly matched for the contest, with either team likely to take the win.

After about 20 minutes of aggressive, energized play, Lady Knight junior Haleigh Smith got an assist from freshman Skylar Cathers to put the ball in the back of Magnolia’s net for the score.

With a little over a minute to play in the first half, the Lady Blue tied up the score at one-all with a goal of their own.

The two teams battled back and forth on the field throughout the majority of the second 40 with no score on either side. Finally, with 6:53 to play and the game still tied, Cathers booted a nice goal to put the Silver and Black ahead, 2-1. Twenty-three seconds later, senior Sophie Kinnard got the ball to Smith who found the back of the net for the quick goal.

With the end of the game looming and the ball just put in play after the last goal, it was Consolidated’s Kinnard who connected on a Silver Knight goal. Before the game could end, Smith got the hat-trick for the day, scoring her third goal of the day to give the Lady Knights the 5-1 win.

“This was a good win for the girls,” said head coach of the Silver and Black, Matt Kinnard. “We started out aggressive and ready to play and then cooled down a bit. But we rallied when we needed to and really put in the extra effort. The girls earned the win.”

It was another story on Saturday as Tyler Consolidated faced off with Ravenswood at Burgbacher Field where the Silver and Black took the loss, 5-0.

“We were just flat for some reason,” the coach said. “We were down 4-0 at the half. They scored four goals on 13 shots in the first half and only one goal on 14 shots in the second half. The difference is how our defense played in the second.”

“Our freshman goalie, Vanessa Templeton did a good job in the second half as the goal keeper getting 12 saves.”

“We took 14 shots in the second half and only three in the first. It makes a difference.”

The Lady Knights will host North Marion at home on Saturday.
