Devils defeat ‘Cats

An experienced, senior led Beallsville team traveled to Paden City on Sept. 13 to take on the Wildcats at Berger Field, taking the win 36-14.

"They had four senior lineman who knew what they were doing," said head coach of the Wildcats, Brent Croasmun. "They were smart, fundamentally sound football players who outplayed us."

"We played well in the first half and our kids gave a good effort."

The Blue Devils struck pay dirt first with 9:16 to go in the game as the Blue made good on a 16 yard pass, but Paden City blocked the extra point. Within the next minute the Blue Devils' Palmer recovered a Wildcat fumble and took it in 15 yards for six points.

Paden City's first score of the game came on a Brandon Cross 56 yard interception return with 2:11 to play in the first period. Quarterback Zach Heasley found Luke Cooper in the end zone to connect on the two point pass-conversion to put the score at 12-8 after one.

The visitors scored one touchdown in the third quarter and two in the fourth while holding the Wildcats scoreless until the two minute mark. The Green and White added the last score of the game with Cooper bringing down an eight yard pass from Heasley for six points. The extra point pass conversion play failed, putting the final score of the game at 36-14 in Beallsville's favor.

Offensively, junior Brandon Cross had 11 carries in the game for 23 yards; Kane Pyles rushed four times for 15 yards; and Devon Price ran the ball once to collect eight yards.

Junior quarterback Zach Heasley completed eight of 16 passes for 66 yards. He was intercepted once and threw one touchdown pass.

Receiving stats include sophomore Luke Cooper catching five passes for 56 yards and one touchdown; and Cross who caught one pass for 10 yards.

Defensively, junior Spencer Billings led the way with 10 tackles; Pyles had eight tackles, one for a loss; Cross, seven tackles, one interception return for a TD; Logan Carroll was credited with seven tackles; Heasley had five tackles, one for a loss and two quarterback sacks; Cooper had five tackles; and freshman Hayden Hizer had five tackles.

The loss was the third for the Wildcats this season who will strive to put a mark on the winning side of the scoreboard on Friday when they host the Gilmer County Titans.
