The Paden City Wildcats went up against a stronger Van Bulldog team than expected on Friday night at Van with the hosts putting together a 27 point second quarter to take the lead, and eventually the 41-14 win over the ‘Cats.

“They were a good team, and not to take anything away from them, but we should have won this one,” said Paden City head coach, Brent Croasmun. “We opened up and drove the ball well in the first quarter. And the second quarter just blew up on us.”

Three fumbles and three interceptions on Paden City’s part also played a role in the loss.

Van scored 27 points in the second period and 14 in the third to take the win, while the ‘Cats scored six points in the first period and eight in the second, both touchdowns courtesy of junior running back, Brandon Cross.

Cross rushed 13 times in the game to gain 52 positive yards and one touchdown. Kane Pyles carried the ball eight times to gain 45 yards.

In the passing department, junior quarterback, Zach Heasley had a good night, connecting on 24 of 36 passes for 220 yards, including two TD passes. He was also intercepted three times.

Receivers for the Wildcats included Deven Price who caught seven passes for 48 yards; Luke Cooper, with five passes for 66 yards; Cross, seven passes for 59 yards and one TD; Craig Allen, two catches for 18 yards; Pyles, two catches for 10 yards and Hayden Hizer who caught two passes for 20 yards.

Defensively, junior Spencer Billings led the defense for the Green and White with seven tackles, a sack of the Bulldog quarterback, and caused a fumble in the game. Heasley was credited with six tackles; Cross had five tackles and recovered a fumble; Pyles, five tackles; Allen, five tackles; Hizer, five tackles; and Cooper, four tackles.

“We had a few breakdowns in our defense and we turned the ball over to much,” the coach said. “But we also did some good things, and we’ll be working hard in practice again this week. Hopefully we’ll be able to fix a few things and change a few things for our home game on Friday.”

Paden City will host Beallsville on Friday at Berger Field. Game time is set for 7:30 p.m.
