Following the July 29 Board of Education meeting, Tyler Consolidated High School (TCHS) will welcome two new teaching additions for the upcoming school year. The board approved the hiring of Jeffrey Wittmer as a Math teacher and Lori Franks as a Biology teacher.

In other employment news, they accepted the resignation of Casey Renner, a fifth grade teacher at Sistersville, who is taking a job closer to home in Pleasants County and they approved the transfer of Lisa Bowen from a Cook II position at Tyler Consolidated to a Cook II position at A.I. Boreman.

The board examined another year of contracts with Easter Seals, Vocational Rehabilitation, and Birth to Three, each of which provides different services to Tyler County schools. According to Superintendent Robin Daquilante, they contract every year with these organizations and use their services for students.

Sidewalks used by students as they are dismissed at the end of the day are being repaved before the start of the 2013-2014 school year.

“I’m recommending approval of all of those employments as well as a continuation of our contracts with them,” said Daquilante.

Following her recommendation, they voted to extend all three contracts and approved the related employments.

Director of Nutrition Amanda Kimble recently attended the West Virginia Annual Nutrition Conference and returned with a plaque awarded to Tyler County for having the highest lunch participation of 2012, with a percentage of 79.39 students. Superintendent Robin Daquilante showed the plaque, which shall be hung soon, to fellow board members.

In other nutrition news, they discussed a mandatory alternative breakfast program, which must be legally implemented for the 2014-2015 school year. Kimble will be working with principals of the high school and middle school in order to design such a program. Some of the options mentioned at the meeting included “grab-and-go” foods or possibly a break in the morning for students to eat.

Minutes of the July 15 regular meeting were approved. The next meeting will be held on Aug. 3 at 10 a.m. at the Grande Point Conference Center in Vienna, W.Va., where they will meet with members and superintendents of other county boards of education which belong to Regional Education Service Agency (RESA) 5 in order to identify administrative, coordinating and other county level services and functions that may be shared between them.
