Start shopping for your mind

Bored yet? You shouldn’t be! Summer’s not over, and as we know in the newspaper business, there’s always something going on in the community. Tyler County is an active place, so much so that it’s sometimes difficult to keep up!

However, in the event that you’re not an “event” type of person, or if you’re exhausted from all of the excitement and just want to wind down for a bit, there’s one peaceful hub that’s always ready to meet your mild fancy.

Actually, there are a lot around Tyler County. They’re called… wait for it… libraries.

Unfortunately, we also know that, in this day and age, reading is in the rearview mirror for many people. High five for reading this, by the way! With tablets and electronic readers springing up, you’d think people would be more inclined to explore the classics rather than watching the antics of a cantankerous honey badger for the umpteenth time or launching some very upset birds across the screen.

But no matter how convenient the infinite world of the Internet may seem, there are services that it cannot provide. And the ones it can will cost you.

It’s like this! Instead of spending $9 to download a book you’ve never read and quite possibly may want to set down after the first few chapters, why not check your local library. If they do not currently have the book, they can go to an online database, find where it is, and eventually procure it for you. It may take some time, but your patience pays off when you’ve got a fatter wallet. Besides, how often do you reread even your favorite books? The point is: Why purchase something you’ll only use once when you can borrow it without cost whenever you want.

As for any overdue charges you may rack up, they shouldn’t compare to what you just saved. And let’s face it! Deadlines can be helpful given our societal inclination to procrastinate. We see that book on our night stand and think: I better turn some pages in the next few days!

For those of you who don’t like to read, don’t forget that many libraries also rent movies. They may not be the newest blockbusters, but they won’t bust your wallet, either.

So whether you’re looking for rest from Tyler County adventures or seeking a different kind of adventure, libraries are the place to be. Do yourself a favor and at least give your closest one a browse. Libraries are stores for your mind, only cheaper.
