Tyler County Board of Education met Monday at 7:30 p.m. in the A.I. Boreman Elementary School Library. Prior to the official meeting, they were presented with school highlights on behalf of the Local School Improvement Committee by A.I. Boreman Principal Tricia Feldmeier.
When the meeting commenced, the board acknowledged the road signs dedicated to the winners of the 2011 FFA National Land Judging and Homesite Evaluation Competition. The signs will be attached to all of the existing county signs.
"That's such an unbelievable feat," said board member Ken Hunt about the FFA victory, describing the vast number of teams they had to compete against.
"It's quite an honor," added Superintendent Robin Daquilante.
Given the repeat performance of that victory by the 2013 FFA teams, the board remarked that more signs may be needed.
Regarding a recent fire marshal safety inspection of Tyler County schools, an improvement plan has been drafted following a single noncompliance finding.
Under financial matters, public library funding, funds for the County Extension Office, and the 2013-14 final budget were approved. Also, the board approved "surplus" bus number 27 to be sold.
In sports, the board approved athletic schedules for next school year's girls basketball and soccer seasons. They also accepted the resignation of Bob Jones Jr. as Assistant Baseball Coach, effective at the end of the 2013 season.
Trip requests were approved for the Technology Students Association National Conference in Orlando, Fla.; the Future Business Leaders of America National Leadership Conference in Anaheim, Calif.; the Young Writers Celebration at the University of Charleston, W.Va.; the WTRF-TV Station in Wheeling, W.Va.; and the State Career Development Events in Morgantown, W.Va.
Among other requests: the Middlebourne Youth League was granted permission to use the TCHS Baseball Field for Colt Baseball; early release dates for next school year were accepted; and due to the state track meet being held that weekend, the graduation date for 2014 was moved to Thursday, May 22.
Daquilante explained that many schools have begun holding their graduations midweek.
The board accepted Tracy Toman and Pam Delauder as countywide substitute teachers; Trudy Pethtel as an A.I. Boreman cook; Megan Campbell, Benjamin Thomas, and Tisha Wall as Summer School Elementary Teachers; Diana Stender as Summer School Secondary Teacher; Preston Ferrell as Summer School Bus Operator for the Middlebourne area; Lisa George and Lisa Bowen as Summer Food Program Cafeteria Managers; Greg Goodfellow as Summer Radio Coordinator; Gina Crawford as Math Field Day Coordinator at Sistersville Elementary School (SES); and Becky Thomas as Social Studies Fair Coordinator at SES. Transfers were approved for Kathy Michael to the central office and Shawna Griffin to TCHS. The dates effective for aforementioned transfers and titles may differ.
In other news, the board accepted the adoption of Social Studies textbooks for Kindergarten through Grade 12 and moved the date of Superintendent Robin Daquilante's evaluation to June 24.
They entered into an executive session to discuss a personnel matter. No action was taken upon reentering the regular meeting.
Bills were paid and previous minutes were approved.
The next Tyler County Board of Education meeting is planned for June 3 at 7:30 p.m. in the BOE Office inside Tyler Consolidated High School. At the meeting, they will honor retirees of Tyler County Schools.
