In the inaugural Home Town Invitational Tournament for girls Jan. 12, the top seed Lady Wildcats of Paden City made only 20 shots out of 95 attempts, but still defeated Union Grant 48-16 at Bob Burton Gymnasium.
The Wildcats led 8-6 after one, but would score eight unanswered points in the second period to hold a 16-6 advantage at the break.
Paden City used its defensive quickness and offensive rebounding to widen its lead to 28-8 with one period remaining.
Kayla Barker came off the bench to pace the 'Cats with eight points, while Logan Cosper netted seven markers. Hannah Stanley, Kayla Hizer and Taylor Cosper each recorded six points, while Myah Charkawi provided five points that included a three-ball.
In addition, Darien Ritchie netted four markers, while Lynnsie Parsons, Kelsey Loy and Cydney Blatt scored two apiece.
Blatt led the way in rebounds with 11 rebounds, while Charkawi hauled in nine. Taylor and Logan Cosper had seven and six steals, respectively.
With the win over Union, the Lady 'Cats evened their record to 6-6 on the season.
In the last HIT game before the matchup with Union Grant, the Lady Wildcats (5-6) couldn't get a bucket in the fourth period against Bishop Donahue (3-9) and dropped a disappointing 42-26 decision in Bob Burton Gymnasium Jan. 8.
Only behind 5-4 after one period of play, the Wildcats took a 19-17 lead with them into the locker room.
However, Bishop outscored Paden City 25-7 in the second half of action that included no points in the fourth by the hosts.
Charkawi paced the Green with eight markers, nine rebounds and two blocked shots, while Parsons and Stanley evenly divided a dozen. Taylor Cosper and Logan Cosper scored four and two points, respectively.
Taylor Cosper added five assists and made three steals. Cydney Blatt didn't score, but she hauled in eight boards for the Wildcats.
After a date with Tyler Consolidated Tuesday evening, the Wildcats will host Hundred on Jan. 19 at 6 p.m. with the junior varsity game and the varsity matchup to follow.
