Now that the season is underway and the Silver Knights have two competitions under their belts, the wrestling season will become busier and more urgent heading into the first of the year.

Tyler Consolidated’s wrestling team competed at the Ritchie County Duals on Dec. 8 and finished fourth of eight teams. The Knights (4-3), finished behind Williamstown (7-0), Ritchie County (6-1), and Parkersburg South’s “B” team (5-2); and ahead of Ravenswood (3-4), St Mary (2-5), Notre Dame (0-6-1), and Parkersburg “B” (0-6-1).

“We were one of the more full squads there, so that really played to our advantage in the duals style competition,” said head coach of the Knights, Chad Snider.

“When there are duals involved, it is imperative to have each weight class filled, because if you give up a forfeit for the weight class it is the same as giving up a pin in that class.”

“Many of our wrestlers got to experience their first official duals tournament this weekend, so a lot of the guys also got to experience defeat this weekend. But it was a great opportunity with a steep learning curve.”

Several Knights, however, were able to secure a win or score points for the team.

Senior Joe Henthorn led the pack in wins with an overall record of 6-1 on the day. Jerrod Longwell, Dustin Tawney, Nathan Eddy and Austin Spencer each gave up only two losses for the weekend. At 106, freshman Zach Bonner played his part as well, helping the team to earn 18 points.

“We are still fresh into this year’s season,” the coach said. “As the season continues I expect to see more and more progress.”

On Wednesday . . . . the Knights competed at River and without a full roster, fell to the home team 15-60. Achieving wins on the night were Bonner, Tawney and Spencer.

Wrestling at 106, Bonner took the forfeit; at 120, Dennis was pinned in 1:03; at 138, William Chapman was pinned in :25 by Loren Thomas; at 152, Bailes was pinned in 1:20; at 160, Ruble pinned Jordan Sapp in :59; at 195, Tawney took the win over Dunn by a 3-2 score; at 220, Nathan Eddy was pinned in :28; and wrestling at 285, Austin Spencer pinned Rivers’ Hank Goble in 5:06.

This week the Silver hosted a Tri-meet at home on Tuesday with Magnolia and Linsly. On Dec. 15, the team will host their annual tournament, renamed “The Larry Richie Memorial Tournament”, in honor of their former coach and mentor.

“We’d like everyone to come out and support the wrestling team,” Snider said. “The tournament begins at 10 a.m.”
