Baseball Knights and ‘Cats gain wins

Despite the Spring woes that infiltrates every team at this point of the season, the Silver Knights and Wildcat baseball teams continue to compete to the best of their ability on diamonds throughout the Ohio Valley.

Paden City

The Wildcats edged out the Hundred Hornets on April 12 with the 20-19 win over the Blue.

Though it was a closer game than many expected, the ‘Cats were able to plate an extra runner in the middle innings to get the win.

Kyle Postlethwait started on the mound for the Green, walking two and striking out four in three innings. Freshman Zach Heasley came on in relief, getting his first varsity win, with one walk and five strike outs in four innings.

At the plate, Matt Barker hit two singles to bring home two runs; Heasley helped himself with three singles for four RBI’s; Jared Stewart had one single and one triple for two RBI’s; Jay Billiter singled and doubled, for four RBI’s; Kyle Staton, singled for an RBI; and Taylor Still hit a single to score one runner.

Playing a double header at Bridgeport on April 14, the Wildcats fell short in both games, 12-2 and 13-2

Freshman Craig Allen got his first start at the varsity level in the first game, going innings, walking five and striking out two. Barker came on in relief.

Offensively, Barker doubled for an RBI; Stewart singled for an RBI; Heasley and Trey Leonard each singled.

In the second game, Leonard started the game on the mound, walking three; Billiter came on for two innings, walking five; and Levi Meadows threw in the last inning, walking one.

At the plate, Barker doubled; Heasley hit one triple to collect two RBI’s; Leonard, Allen and Staton each singled.

On Monday the ‘Cats played host to the Valley Lumberjacks, getting three runs on five hits with two errors in the 4-3 loss.

Heasley took the loss on the mound with four strike outs and seven walks. He also singled in the game to bring home a run and Barker doubled.

The ‘Cats will host Parkersburg Catholic on Wednesday and will seek OVAC playing time over the next several days.

Tyler Consolidated

The Silver Knights played host to Calhoun County in a double header on April 10. The Silver came out ahead in both games, gaining the win over Calhoun 11-3 and 15-14.

Consolidated scored 11 runs on nine hits and committed two errors in game one while Calhoun scored three on seven hits and had two errors.

The Knights were on their game scoring two quick runs in the first and three in the third to take a nice lead in game one on their way to the win.

Working the mound for the Silver, senior Justin Carpenter got the win with five strikeouts and six walks;

At the plate, Dalton Wells singled twice; Evan Davis hit one single for two RBI’s; Koty Martin singled twice for an RBI; and Dalton Parsons singled to collect one RBI.

The Knights sewed up the second win of the day with a 15-14 score over the Red Devils. The Knights scored their 15 runs on 11 hits and committed six errors in the game. The Devils had six its and six errors.

Martin controlled the pitcher’s mound for the Knights in the first few innings, walking eight batters and striking out three. Dalton Parsons wound up with the win, pitching four innings throwing eight strike outs and walking four.

At the plate, Davis hit three singles and a triple for four RBI’s; Martin singled twice for two RBI’s; Cecil Spencer singled twice for two RBI’s; Michael singled; and Parsons hit a single for two RBI’s.

Playing at Bellaire St. Johns on April 11, the Knights put together some good innings to take the win, 12-2 over the Irish.

The Knights had 15 hits and only one error in the game while St. Johnm scored their two runs on five hits and had six errors.

Wells struck out one and walked one as the pitcher.

Isaac Michael hit three singles to collect three RBI’s; Wells singled and tripled to plate two runners; Martin, singled twice to score a runner; Parsons singled twice for one RBI; Bobby Moore hit two singles; Austin Brown singled; and Spenser singled for an RBI.

The Silver Knights will host Ravenswood in a double header on April 21 at 1 p.m. The next scheduled game for the team will be on April 27 at Ritchie County.
