Grapplers compete at River

Tyler Consolidated's varsity wrestlers are showing that hard work and practice pay off as they continue to see success throughout the season.

On Jan. 2? the Knights participated in the River High School tournament, securing a fourth place overall finish with six wrestlers placing.

The team representing Belpre High School took first place overall at the tournament with 82 points, followed by Barnesville with 67; Magnolia, 64; Monroe Central, 60; River, 58; Tyler Consolidated, 58; Bellaire 52; and Shenandoah, 46.

Senior Dakota Allen, wrestling at 220 secured the only first place finish for the Silver, defeating Cole Matthews of Monroe Central for the top podium slot.

Finishing second on the day for the Silver were: John Brosky, 126; and Mario Mantecon, 160; two finishing with third places: Hunter LeMasters, 152; Dustin Tawney, 182; and Jay Earley, 195; and one finishing fourth, Dustin Tawney, 182.

The Knights also had two wrestlers who secured their first victories of the season in Jerrod Longwell and Jay Early.

"It was nice to be able to go right next door and get in some tough matches and still be competitive as a team," said head Silver Knight head coach, Chad Snider.

The wrestling team will host a home tri-meet tonight with Ritchie and Bishop Donahue. On Saturday, the Knights will host the LKC wrestling championships, hosting some of the premier wrestlers in the state. The competition is set to begin at 10:30 a.m.
