Paden City High School girls and boys basketball teams have busy lately, both on the road and at home. Coaches Fred King and Kelly Sine are readying their teams for post-season play, hoping to peak at the end of the season.
For the fourth time this season, the Paden City Lady Wildcat held a halftime lead only to see their opponents come back to gain the nod, this time it was to Bishop Donahue at Bob Burton Gymnasium on Jan. 10, 47-38.
After holding a 20-16 lead at the break, Bishop Donahue would tally 12 markers in the third period, while holding the Lady 'Cats to one bucket and two free throws to grab its first lead of the season, at 28-24 heading into the final period of play.
Bishop's lead ballooned to 13 points, before the Lady 'Cats trimmed it down to a bucket late in the game. Donahue would not be denied however, in picking up its first victory of the season.
"Nothing is going right for us," said Wildcat head coach Kelly Sine. "Every time we hit the floor, we are prepared, but once the tip starts, it looks like we have never practiced before."
Senior Dominique Craft was the only Paden City player in double figures, with 14 points. She only made one basket, but tickled the twine 12-17 times for a team-high 14 markers. She also pulled down a team-high eight boards, made two steals and dished out a pair of assists.
Logan Cosper and Hannah Stanley each recorded nine points, while Lynnsie Parsons added six points, including one from beyond the arch. Kayla Hizer tallied a basket and a free hrow. Amanda Heasley sat out most of the game due to an injury, but hauled in seven rebounds, five of which came on the offensive side of the ball.
Paden City had only four players score in a 55-31 loss to Bellaire St. John in Wildcat territory Jan. 14.
Freshman Hannah Stanley paced the home team with a dozen points, including a pair of baskets from beyond the arc. Craft and Heasley each totaled seven points, while junior point guard Logan Cosper nailed a deuce and a three pointer.
The Lady 'Cats will host Wood County Christian School on Jan. 19 and will travel to Bishop Donahue on Jan. 24. On Jan. 24, the 'Cats welcome East Richland to Paden City for a game.
Freshman Kennedy Cain tallied a team-high 20 points and Zach Heasley and Geoffrey Bidwell each netted 10 points, but it was not enough as the Bishops of Bishop Donahue were just too much for the young 'Cats to over-take, falling 93-56 in Paden City on Jan. 10.
Cain also brought down five rebounds, had two steals and one assist in the game. Heasley had four rebounds, one steal and one assist; Geoffrey Bidwell, five rebounds, two steals, one assist; Brandon Cross contributed seven points, had two rebounds, one assist; Kane Pyles, five points, five rebounds, two assists; Levi Meadows, two points, Craig Allen, two points, two rebounds, one steal and one assist; Drew Bidwell, two rebounds, one steal, one assist; and Jamie Billiter, three rebounds and three steals.
Brothers, Geoffrey and Drew Bidwell, marked up 31 points to lead Paden City in its third victory of the season against Bellaire St John, 66-29, in Bob Burton Gymnasium Saturday.
The Wildcats opened the game with a 8-0 run before settling for a 10-4 lead after one period of play. The Wildcats upped their total by a deuce, while limiting their Irish visitors to two baskets in the second frame to go into the locker room up 22-8.
Paden City tallied 17 points in the third period and 27 more in the fourth period to avenge an earier defeat with a convincing 37-point victory.
Geoffrey Bidwell totaled 18 points, grabbed three rebounds, had one block and one assist in the game; Cain scored 14 points, pulled down 10 boards, had one block, and two steals; Drew Bidwell, 13 points, three rebounds, one block, two steals and five assists; Heasley nine points, eight rebounds, two steals, one assist; Billiter six points, four rebounds, one steal and one assist; Pyles, two points, four rebounds; Cross, two points; and Allen two points.
Freshman Kennedy Cain tallied 20 points, but it wasn't enough as the Beallsville Blue Devils defeated Paden City 68-36 on Monday in Blue Devil territory.
The young Wildcats were able to hang with the Devils in the first period, before Beallsville exploded for 21 points, while holding the 'Cats to six markers to grab a 40-17 halftime lead.
Cain also was credited with one rebound, one steal and one assist in the game. Heasley followed Cain with seven points, had two rebounds and two assists; Drew Bidwell scored five, had two rebounds, one block, two steals and four assists; Billiter, four points, five rebounds; Pyles, one rebound; Allen, one rebound, one steal, one assist; Geoffrey Bidwell, one rebound.
The Wildcats will look to get win number four when they host Harman at 1 p.m. in Paden City on Jan. 21. The team will head to Bishop Donahue on Jan. 24, and will host Williamstown on Jan. 26.
