Soccer team ends season with cancellation

By Staff | Oct 19, 2011

Before they storm head on into post season play next week, the Silver Knight boys varsity soccer team had two games scheduled last week, in order to tweak their strategies and hone their skills. Unfortunately, only one game was played thanks to field conditions.

In the one game played, the Silver Knights hosted South Harrison at Burgbacher Field in Middlebourne on Oct. 11, easily taking the win, 3-0. Again forcing their opponents to play defense for the majority of the game, Tyler Consoliated’s boys worked the ball well on the muddy field.

Goals for the Knights were scored by Johan Aasland; a corner kick by Matthew Goudy to Dylan Reynolds who headed the ball in the net; and by Jeremy Smith.

Knight goal keeper, Skylar Kinnard, was credited with three saves in the game.

“We played well, with determination,” said head coach of the Knights, Scott Wall. “We wanted to end our season strong with these last two games. We were poised to do well in the Ravenswood game on Saturday, but unfortunately, that didn’t happen because of cancellation.”

Game and school officials made the call to deem Burgbacher Field unplayable on Saturday morning due to the mud, standing water and ruts thanks to excessive rain, forcing the cancellation of the Silver Knights last game of the season. The team was to host the Red Devils of Ravenswood as well as honor the seniors on the team.

“We made the best of a bad situation,” Wall said. “We didn’t get to play our game, but we did honor our seniors. I just hate that these six guys didn’t get to play in this last game of our season as we had planned. It was disappointing to all of us.”

“Our field this year is as bad as I’ve ever seen it in the past nine years because of all the rain that we’ve had in the past several weeks. It doesn’t get time to dry out before the next hard rain hits it again.”

Seniors on the team this season are: Skylar Kinnard and Jeremy Smith, co-captains; Chris Postlethwait, Tanner Buchannan, Nik Keller and Johan Aasland.

“These guys have been great to work with and to coach,” Wall said.

“They led the younger kids easily and enthusiastically. Three of them, Skylar, Jeremy and Chris have been with us in previous years, but Nik, Tanner and Johan all joined the team this season. In fact we had eight guys brand new to soccer this season, and it’s mainly due to the leadership and encouragement of our seniors that they have meshed so well with the rest of the team and worked on their games enough to make us as competitive a team as we are.”

“They’ve been a real asset to us.”

The Silver Knights will begin Sectional play on Saturday in New Martinsville as the top seed in the Section pairings.

The team will play the winner of Magnolia and Morgantown Trinity in New Martinsville at 4:30 p.m. The winner of this game will play in the Regional game the following week.
