Consolidated golfers finish season

By Staff | Sep 29, 2011

Last week signaled the end of the 2011 regular season for West Virginia high school golf teams with Regionals beginning in most Regions on Monday. The Silver Knight golf team of Tyler Consolidated finished their regular season with an 18-40 win/loss record.

On Sept. 19 the team played at the Woodridge Plantation Golf Course in the LKC tournament, not placing as high as they had hoped in the field of competitors. The Ritchie County team took first place in the tournament with a team score of 306, followed by Parkersburg Catholic, 333; Williamstown, 337; St. Marys, 369; Wirt, 375; Roane, 377; South Harrison, 400; Braxton, 405; Clay, 408; Ravenswood, 414; Tyler Consolidated, 415; and Gilmer County, 416.

Dalton Wells finished with a round of 44/48 for an overall score of 92, followed by Swayde Carpenter with 46/49, 95; Luke Carpenter with 51/61, 112; Dylan Tippins with 54/61, 116, and Blake Carpenter with 63/58, 121.

“The players all had higher scores than we had anticipated,” said head coach of the Silver Knight golfers, Joe Griffith. “After his round, Dalton and Swayde didn’t have anything they could pinpoint that led to their high scores; it was just generally not a good day for their golf game”

“There were a couple of short showers during the day, but nothing significant. Woodridge has a lot of small hills lining both sides of the fairways, and although it was mowed fairly well throughout, some of the guys got into trouble when their shots went wide of the fairways.”

“We certainly missed having Corey Wells as part of our team. He most likely will not be able to play any of the rest of the season because of his knee injury. He will probably be having surgery in the near future to try to correct the torn meniscus. He’s an excellent player and we all hope that his surgery goes well and he is able to return to the team in good form for next season.”

At their home course, the Sistersville Country Club, on Sept. 20, the Silver Knights hosted both Magnolia and Paden City in their annual “Parents night” activity. The Blue Eagle team placed first in the golf competition on the evening with a team score of 167. The Knights scored, 186 and Paden City finished with 238.

Individual scores for Consolidated players include, Dalton Wells, 39; Swayde Carpenter, 42; Dylan Tippins, 50; Blake Carpenter, 55; Mitchell Higgins, 55; Isaiah Casenelli, 56; Luke Carpenter, 60; and John Lancaster, 61.

“This was our annual Parents’ Night at the end of the season, when players and parents from Paden City, Magnolia and Tyler all enjoy a meal after the match,” Griffith said. “It’s a very nice way for the players and families to finish off the regular season.”

“Dalton and Swayde both recovered nicely from their high scores the day before. Dalton was back into the upper 30’s and Swayde was in the low 40’s. Dylan Tippins was only one stroke behind his best score of the season. So for those three seniors, it was a good ending to the regular season.”

“Blake Carpenter, a freshman, finished in the middle 50’s, while Mitchell Higgins and Isaiah Casenelli, both first-year players as juniors, had their best rounds of the season.”

“Luke Carpenter struggled on the day, but as a first-year player, he has shown considerable progress this season. Our final player is freshman John Lancaster, who also is in his first year of playing golf. John and many of his teammates who were new to playing golf less than two months ago, have improved in many aspects of their game. They are making much better contact with the ball and their scores are starting to come down. If they will commit themselves to regular practice in the off-season, we should have some solid scores for the team next year.”

Griffith also encourages future golfers in the area to take the sport seriously and get involved with the local home course. “I encourage any student-high school or middle school-who is serious about playing golf to get a membership at the Sistersville Country Club.”

“The club is currently running a promotion where 18-month memberships are available for the same price as a normal 12-month membership. Memberships normally begin in April, but students (or adults) who buy their membership now will be able to play through March of 2013. Student memberships are just $200, and that is a great deal for youngsters who want to play regularly.”

Regional tournament play began on Monday at Williams Country Club in Weirton.

“Williams is a beautiful course. It has some challenging holes, but it also is quite playable even for the high school age player,” the coach said.

“We had a match there earlier in the season, and without having seen the course before, Swayde and Corey both finished at three over par, with Dalton at six over par. Dalton, Swayde, Dylan and Blake will be the four who will represent the team in this year’s Regional action.”

“We will compete against Weir, Oak Glen, Magnolia, Ritchie, Roane, Ravenswood and Point Pleasant. Ritchie is the defending state champions in the AA division, but two teams qualify for the state tournament, along with two individuals.”

“So we should have a good shot at having someone move on to play at the Jones Course at Oglebay Park during the first week in October.”
