With only one game during the week, and that one a win, the Silver Knight boys varsity soccer team is looking ahead to the meat of their schedule in the upcoming few weeks.
On Sept. 1 the team was scheduled to play at Wheeling Central, but due to scheduling conflicts, the game was played at Burgbacher Field in Middlebourne, the home of the Knights, instead.
Against the sometimes formidable Maroon Knights, Consolidated stuck to their game plan, taking the 3-0 win when all was said and done.
"We played okay in the beginning," said head coach Scott Wall. "We led 2-0 at the half and held them off."
"They came out strong and quick, but we played with them and our defense held them scoreless. Our strategy was to wait them out, and this time, it worked."
Freshman Nathan Heintzman scored his first career varsity goal in the game, taking a chance at an open shot. "I like to see the younger kids get a goal," the coach said. "It makes them hungry for more, and willing to take more chances at scoring. We only benefit from that attitude."
Also scoring for the Silver was Sophomore defender, Dylan Romine, who placed two kicks in the net to secure the Knight lead and eventual win.
"That Dylan continues to score as a defender is a statement to his consistency," Wall said. "He finds a way to maneuver himself into scoring positions in almost every game."
Knight goal keeper, Skylar Kinndard, had two saves on the day in his third shut-out of the season. The Knights took 13 shots at the Maroon's net during the game.
"We played well as a team this time out," the coach said. "Our defense continues to play well and our offense is beginning to step up. That's the kind of play we've been looking for."
The Knight record now stands at 2-0-3 on the season with three contests to play this week. The Silver and Black will host Weir on Tuesday, a team that has put them out of Regional contention for the past two years; on Thursday they will play at St. Marys and on Saturday they travel to take on a 7-0 Oak Glen Golden Bears team.
"If we play like we can, we should be able to be competitive this week," Wall said. "It would be good to have these three wins under our belts."
