Consolidated is shut-out for second time in ‘11

It was a dismal evening for Friday night football in Tyler County on Sept. 2 as the favored home team fell for the second time in as many weeks. The Knights were defeated by the visiting Roane County Raiders, 62-0.

In the opening couple of minutes of the game, Roane’s Nathan Reynolds took a four yard carry inside the goal line to put the opponents first score of the evening on the scoreboard, followed by the extra-point kick. The Raiders would go to score another 41 points in the first half to put the score at 48-0 by halftime, on their way to their first win of the season.

Roane County had six first downs in the game to the Knights five. The Raiders earned 303 rushing yards on 33 carries and 146 passing yards to Consolidated’s 109 rushing yards on 40 carries. The Raiders fumbled three times and recovered all; the Knights had seven fumbles, losing three. Roane County was penalized five times in the game to cost them 20 yards while the Silver collected four penalties for 15 yards.

Offensively, senior Evan Cline led the Silver in yards gained on the ground with 42 yards collected on nine carries. Jacob Highley rushed 12 times for 40 yards; Skyler Leasure ran the ball five times for the home team for 21 yards; Cole Kocher rushed three times for two yards; John Kocher had 10 rushes for plus two yards and J.P. Flesher earned two yards on one carry.

In the passing department, sophomore Cole Kocher attempted two passes and was intercepted once.

On special teams, Justin Carpenter punted the ball four times for 153 yards; Drew Casey punted once for 36 yards; Leasure returned one punt for 10 yards and collected 40 yards on kickoff returns; Martin had 33 yards in kickoff returns; Brennaman had 15 yards in kickoff returns.

Defensively for the Silver, Cline was credited with six solo tackles and two assists. Nathan Billiter had four solos and three assists; Highley had three solos, one assist and blocked a Roane County kick; Levi Henderson had three solo tackles and sacked the quarterback once; Swen Scheidemantel had three solos and four assists; Cole Kocher had two solo tackles; Dakota Brennaman had two solos and one assist; Spencer Billings had two solo tackles; Nick Cross had two solo tackles; Raphe Bailes had one solo tackle, batted down a pass, and blocked a kick; J.P. Flesher had one solo and one assist; Cecil Spencer had one solo; and Troy Watson had one solo. Kyle Jones assisted on three tackles and sacked the Raider quarterback once; Drew Casey had two assists; and Koty Martin, John Kocher, and Jay Earley each were credited with one assist apiece.

“We’re all accountable,” said head coach Rob Caldwell of the loss. “Every coach, every player, we’re all accountable for our actions and each one of us have to determine to do better. We’re going to have to gear down and get back to the basics of football. None of us want a game like this, but we’re the ones to have to make it happen.”

The Silver Knights will strive to earn their first win of the season on Friday at Knight Stadium when the Magnolia Blue Eagles will enter Tyler County. The Eagles, having already faced defeat at the hands of both Wayne County and Williamstown, will be also be looking for their first win of the 2011 season.

The game is scheduled to begin at 7 p.m.
