For a town that is divided politically and geographically, Paden City has shown of late that its inhabitants can come together for a cause dear to the their hearts.
The recent dredging up of school pride brought to the surface by rumors of the impending closure of Paden City High School, has the town in an uproar and you can't go anywhere without the topic arising at least once.
As evidenced by the speeches given by graduates from the Class of 2009, the closure of the school is not something that is only on the minds of the adults in Paden City. Valedictorian Wes Cosper delivered an unforgettable ode to his alma mater stating, "I have been a Wildcat. I have given my heart and soul to this school and in return it has taught me about pride and dedication and rewarded me with the best six years of my life. I hope, from the bottom of my heart, that 15 years from now, the class valedictorian of the PCHS Class of 2024 will be able to stand at this podium, look out over a sea of green and say the same thing." Cosper was rewarded by a prolonged standing ovation by the nearly 1,000 present.
Powerful words for a young man, a powerful message from a community divided in more ways than one but unified to save their school.
