Wetzel hospital cuts 8 jobs, other workers' hours

March 23, 2014
Associated Press

NEW MARTINSVILLE, W.Va. (AP) — Wetzel County Hospital is making cuts in response to a changing health care landscape.

The hospital has eliminated eight positions and reduced the hours of 15 other workers. It also is leaving vacant positions unfilled.

Chief Executive Officer Brian Felici tells The Intelligencer and Wheeling News Register (http://bit.ly/1hTuIlB ) that there has been a shift in recent years from inpatient to outpatient care due to medical technology advances.

As a result, fewer patients are being admitted for a long period of time.

Felici says other factors include new Medicare payment policies and changes resulting from the federal Affordable Care Act.

He says the closure of Ormet Corp.'s aluminum smelter in nearby Hannibal, Ohio, also has affected the hospital's revenue.
