W.Va. charity benefits from food package misprint

January 26, 2014
Associated Press

BLUEFIELD, W.Va. (AP) — Bluefield Union Mission has received $9,000 worth of donated chicken, thanks to a misprint.

Executive director Craig Hammond tells the Bluefield Daily Telegraph (http://bit.ly/1n2sPr0 ) that a worker at a chicken processing plant hit the wrong key on the machine that imprints the "sell by" date on the packaging. The machine imprinted 2001 instead of 2014.

The plant contacted Bluefield Union Mission and donated the chicken.

Hammond says the donation came at a good time. Supplies of food, especially meat, were running low after the first two weeks in January.
