Logan man charged with stealing copper from mine

CARETTA, W.Va. (AP) — A Logan County man faces charges of stealing copper from an idled coal mine in McDowell County.

State police Trooper C.A. Dunn tells the Bluefield Daily Telegraph ( that 41-year-old Frank Kovach Jr. of Kistler is charged with of destruction of property, theft, petit larceny and trespassing.

Kovach is accused of taking a section of mine cable from the Roadfork Mine. He also is accused of causing about $2,000 damage to electrical units and about $500 damage to a tram in the mine.

Dunn says a man who was with Kovach fled the scene.

Kovach was arrested Saturday.

The investigation is continuing.
