W.Va. sheriff's office obtains armored vehicle

December 16, 2013
Associated Press

WELCH, W.Va. (AP) — The McDowell County Sheriff's Department has a new attack-resistant vehicle in its fleet.

The Daily Telegraph reports (http://bit.ly/1ba7pPk ) that the department recently acquired a Mine Resistant Ambush Protection armored personnel carrier from the military. The 51,000-pound vehicle, which can transport 11 people, is equipped with bullet-resistant tires and widows. It has six-wheel drive and is capable of crossing waterways, reaching isolated households and approaching barricaded suspects.

Sheriff's Sgt. James Muncy says the vehicle was obtained through the federal Law Enforcement Support Office, which gives away surplus equipment rather than scrap it or store it as the military continues to shrink.

The federal government could reclaim the vehicle in the event of a national emergency.
