HARPERS FERRY, W.Va. (AP) — The Jefferson County Sheriff's Office says hunters found human skeletal remains along the Shenandoah River in Harpers Ferry.
The Herald-Mail (http://bit.ly/1c14idp ) reports that hunters made the discovery on Thanksgiving. Sheriff Peter Dougherty believes the remains had been there at least a year, or longer.
The remains are being examined at the West Virginia State Medical Examiner's Office.
Dougherty said he expects it will be a week to 10 days before he receives information from the medical examiner's office regarding the person's gender or age.
He said a forensic team will also investigate the area where the remains were found.
Dougherty said investigators do not have any leads on the identity of the remains.
