Attorneys: Ohio coach's charges are 'unsupported'

STEUBENVILLE, Ohio (AP) — Attorneys for a volunteer football coach indicted in an Ohio grand jury investigation prompted by a rape case say the accusations against him are "unsupported."

Matthew Belardine of Steubenville (STOO'-behn-vihl) was one of four people charged Monday after an investigation following the rape of a 16-year-old West Virginia girl by two high school football players. Authorities said Belardine's home was the scene of an underage drinking party that preceded the rape last summer.

The misdemeanor charges against him include making a false statement and contributing to underage alcohol consumption.

He's being represented by attorneys Brian Duncan and Adam Nemann, who previously represented one of the football players.

The school district superintendent, an elementary school principal and a strength coach also were indicted Monday.
