Dem delegate switching to GOP for W.Va. Senate run

CHARLESTON, W.Va. (AP) — The chairman of the West Virginia Republican Party says a Democrat member of the House of Delegatess switching to the GOP and plans to seek a state Senate seat.

Chairman Conrad Lucas told The Associated Press on Monday that Ryan Ferns of Ohio County plans to hold news conferences in Wheeling and Charleston to make the announcement.

Lucas says Ferns plans to seek the 1st District Senate seat held by Democrat Rocky Fitzsimmons of Ohio County.

Ferns was elected to the House in 2010 and re-elected in 2012.

Ferns didn't immediately return a telephone message.

In June, Ferns said he had no plans to switch parties after voting for Republican Tim Armstead of Kanawha County in the race for House speaker won by Democrat Tim Miley.
