CHARLESTON, W.Va. (AP) — The National Coal Heritage Area's new guide allows smartphone users to access information about the state's coal industry from the online West Virginia Encyclopedia.

The Exploring the West Virginia Coalfields guide includes codes provided by the West Virginia Encyclopedia staff that can be scanned and displayed with smartphones.

The guide offers four driving tours and includes 33 coal-related sites in southern West Virginia.

West Virginia Humanities Council director Ken Sullivan says in a news release that the codes put the online encyclopedia's depth at the instant disposal of visitors to historic locations.

The council operates the encyclopedia.
