ELLENBORO, W.Va. (AP) — Some former West Virginia University football players are helping to kick off a school initiative to fight childhood obesity.
Ex-WVU football players Aaron Beasley, Jimmy Gary, John Browning and Mike Logan are scheduled to attend the event Thursday at Ritchie County Middle School. They'll be exercising with students on a video entertainment system.
Four Ritchie County elementary schools and one middle school will participate in the program developed by the nonprofit 'nPLAY Foundation. The foundation is a coalition of active and retired pro athletes united in making schoolchildren more active and getting them to eat healthier foods.
More than 27 percent of the state's fifth-graders were considered obese in 2011.
