PARKERSBURG, W.Va. (AP) — A Parkersburg man has admitted in court to striking a 3-year-old boy who later died.

Thirty-year-old Matthew Lamp pleaded guilty Thursday in Wood County Circuit Court to a charge of death of a child by a parent or guardian.

Court records show the boy was left in Lamp's care in late September at the home of the boy's mother. Lamp said in court he punched the child in the head, causing the boy to hit a counter. The child was pronounced dead at a hospital three days later.

Lamp faces up to 40 years in prison. The Parkersburg News and Sentinel ( reports prosecutors and Lamp's attorney agreed to a 30-year sentence, although the agreement isn't binding. Judge Bob Waters set a hearing for Jan. 6.
