October 6, 2013

ATHENS, W.Va. (AP) — It's been nearly six decades since Billy Owens broke the color barrier at Concord University.

Last week, Owens returned to the Athens campus to serve as grand marshal of the homecoming parade and to participate in an open forum with students and staff. He also was recognized during Saturday's football homecoming game.

Owens enrolled at the school, then called Concord College, in 1954 after serving in the Air Force.

He tells the Bluefield Daily Telegraph (http://bit.ly/1acmEZb ) that his classmates were polite and he never heard any negative words.
