Amazon to collect 6 pct sales tax in W.Va.

CHARLESTON, W.Va. (AP) — Amazon will start collecting a 6 percent sales tax on purchases shipped to West Virginia starting next month.

The Charleston Gazette ( reports the e-commerce giant will start applying the state sales tax on Oct. 1.

The Legislature this year signed off on Gov. Earl Ray Tomblin's plan to pursue more sales taxes from online retailers. The law requires out-of-state retailers to start applying West Virginia's sales tax if they or a subsidiary have a physical presence in-state. opened a customer service center in Huntington in 2011.

Several other states have pursued similar legislation as brick-and-mortar businesses complain of an unfair tax burden.
