CHARLESTON, W.Va. (AP) — The last commercial excursion boat operating on the Kanawha River is sailing off of to Louisiana next month.
The sternwheeler Spirit of West Virginia has been offering public river tours for four seasons.
Owners Dick and Nancy Daugherty of Dunbar told media outlets Tuesday they have sold the 40-year-old vessel to a retired Louisiana towboat operator.
The decision to sell was motivated by several factors, including insurance, maintenance and fuel costs. The time commitment also worked into the decision.
The Daughertys are employed in land-based jobs as well.
Ruble's Sternwheelers in Belpre, Ohio, built the 85-foot excursion boat in 1973.
