INSTITUTE, W.Va. (AP) — Construction is starting soon on the first new residence hall on the West Virginia State University campus since 1969.

The school says the new Judge Damon J. Keith Scholars Hall will feature two-, three- and four-bedroom suites.

A groundbreaking is set for Sept. 20. The 291-bed, four-story hall is expected to open for the fall semester of 2014.

The hall is named in honor of Keith, a WVSU alumnus and a longtime judge on the 6th U.S. Circuit Court of Appeals. Keith graduated from West Virginia State in 1943.

WVSU President Brian O. Hemphill says the new residence hall is a symbol of growth and prosperity on campus.

The hall will also be home to a cafe and gaming room on its first floor.
