![]() Always under construction...Resilience
The Merriam-Webster online dictionary defines resilience as " an ability to recover from or adjust easily to misfortune or change".
I believe that my Christmas cactus is full of it. No, really. I bought it at Lowe's in January of 2007 off of the clearance rack for $.75. Not expecting it to do anything, let alone LIVE, it certainly surprised us. I repotted it, watered it regularly, and gave it a dose of MiracleGro once in a while. It's been living on our sunporch for a year and a half now. Last summer, Toby, our Jack Russel knocked it over a few times. Each time I scooped it up, stuck it back in the pot, put the dirt back in, and wondered if it would continue to live. It did. Then, this past winter, our neighbor's cat came in, wreaking havoc, and ended up knocking the Christmas cactus down. Of course all of the dirt spilled out, and I believe the poor thing got stepped on, but back into the pot it went, where it not only lived but managed to produce a few new leaves. Most recently, Lucy, our Walker Bluetick not only knocked it down, but drug it through the house, took it under our bed, and chewed on it. I felt so bad for the little thing, that I thought the best thing would be to just put it out of its misery. But I'm not one to let a houseplant die if I can help it, especially one that seemed to want to live. Again, I repotted it. It's growing. Again. I haven't had a bloom yet, but I'm very optomistic. It's still on the sunporch, but safely away from pets. I'm hoping that our Christmas cactus will thrive, and one day, bloom.
