NORTH TO SECOND BASE — Brody Northcraft makes his attempt to steal second base last Wednesday against sectional rival Magnolia. |
It was a rough week for the Silver Knights baseball team as they faced quality opponents of each class in West Virginia.
With Williamstown in Class A, Magnolia in AA and John Marshall in AAA, some of the finest baseball teams in the state made their presence known in Kidwell.
The Yellowjackets visited on Tuesday for an LKC afternoon showdown. Prime pitching and defense by the ‘Jackets left the Tyler Consolidated bats stinging as they no-hit the Knights. Williamstown scored their 10th run in the fourth to enforce the mercy-rule in the fifth inning.
Things didn’t get any easier as Magnolia visited Wednesday for a sectional preview. The Blue Eagles again made short work of the Knights this time winning 15-4 in five innings.
Magnolia got on board first with six runs to open the game and scored 13 runs before the Silver Knights lit up their side of the scoreboard in the third inning with four runs. The Eagles added two in the fourth to eclipse the 10-run mark again.
The Knights were allowed only one hit which went to Brody Northcraft. He would later score. Zach Perky and Logan Efaw each tallied an RBI.
After meeting a 700-plus win coach in Dave Cisar, the Knights were greeted by another in John Marshall’s Bob Montgomery with a story all too familiar on the week as the Knights were 10-run-ruled by the Monarchs.
Tyler Consolidated did stay close for the first couple of innings however. After an emotional and heartfelt ceremony honoring Courtney Evans, the school’s only first team all-state player, the Silver Knights came out and answered the Monarch’s two runs in the first inning to tie the game. John Marshall added another in the second to take a 3-2 lead before their depth inundated the Knights.
Six runs in the third and five in the third ended any hopes of an upset. Tyler Consolidated’s one run in the third and fifth made the score 14-4.
Perky highlighted the offense with a solo shot in the third. He went 2-3 on the evening scoring twice with two RBIs.
Matt Marsh had a double and two runs. Efaw and Michael Cochrin each had a hit and an RBI.
The Silver Knights reached the W column once again after an exciting game against Doddridge County that went into extra innings.
The game was originally supposed to be played at Doddridge County, but because of their field it was moved to Kidwell even though the Bulldogs were still designated as the home team.
At first, it appeared that the Bulldogs were going to start where they left off from their prior game against the Knights, a 9-1 win, as they scored runs in the first and fifth inning, but the Silver Knights would get on board to tie the game in the top of the sixth with runs by Zack Minger and Brody Northcraft with Michael Cochran earning an RBI.
They would remain scoreless from there through the seventh inning, causing the need for baseball’s overtime. Fortunately for the Knights, it wouldn’t take long to get what they needed.
Zach Perkey came up to the plate and launched one in the right center field, which literally caused the center fielder to stop in his tracks and try and find the ball. It just happened to fall 30-feet past the fence for a solo home run and the 3-2 lead.
Perkey, who also pitched the entire game, shut down the ‘Dogs from their earning him an impressive one-hit win.
Tyler Consolidated pounded out seven hits, with Efaw and Cochran each getting two. Cochran additionally had an RBI. Perkey, Minger and Northcraft had the other hits with all three scoring runs.
“We’ve lost four one-run games and a two-run game, so we’ve been on the other side of it, so my heart goes out to Doddridge,” said Coach Meeks.
“But I’d be lying if I said we didn’t need this one. The young ones worked hard and some of them really stepped up big tonight.”
The Silver Knights will play at Monroe Central on Wednesday starting at 5 p.m.
