Lady Wildcats Softball winless on week

NO GHOSTS ON FIRST — Alli Bertozzi looks on as LeaAnn Butcher awaits to catch the ball at first base for the force out.
The road woes continued for the Lady Wildcats softball team as they dropped three games on the road to St. Marys, Shadyside and Madonna.

On Wednesday, Paden City traveled south to Pleasants County to take on the Lady Blue Devils.

It would be a short trip as St. Marys had an explosive afternoon, scoring 15 runs in a mercy-rule shortened game.

Paden City was limited to only two base runners. One came on a walk and the other was a result of Syndney Frye’s hit. Kim Davis was the pitcher for the Lady ‘Cats and struck out five.

On Thursday, the Wildcats battled Shadyside for the first of two games during the week. Offensively they out-hit the Lady Tigers 9-6, but couldn’t generate many runs and fell 5-1.

The Lady ‘Cats were in trouble early in the first after Vicki Yurisko walked a few batters. Davis would come on in relief and struck out the first batter she faced after falling behind 3-0 in the count.

She forced the next batter to fly out to first and almost get out of the jam when the runner at second base was nearly doubled up in the play. It would prove costly as the next batter knocked in a pair of runs, but the ‘Cats got out of the inning without any more damage.

Paden City fought back, but every time the ‘Cats were ready to fight back offensively, it seemed as though they would fly out.

Seven fielding errors by the Wildcats allowed Shadyside a few more runs as well.

Alli Bertozzi had a pair of singles and a double to lead the way for the ‘Cats. Yurisko had two singles and Angelica Phillips had an RBI single to score the only run for Paden City. Davis retired eight batters via strike out.

In a rematch with the Shadyside Tigers, the Paden City Wildcats limited their miscues in the field, but the 10 walks by Davis hurt any chances for the ‘Cats in getting a win.

Just like the first game, Paden City out hit the Tigers 4-2.

Amber Palmer led the way offensively for Paden City with a pair of singles. Davis, despite her wildness struck out eight Tiger batters.

Paden City would also play the Lady Blue Dons of Weirton Madonna, but would lose that game after a stellar pitching performance by Madonna.

The Blue Don pitcher hurled a no-hitter in a 10-0 mercy rule-shortened game. Davis punched out nine Madonna batters while giving up eight hits.
