Lady Knights beat ‘Jackets, head into sectionals Friday

SENIOR SARAH — On her senior night, Sarah McMullen belts out a hit against the Williamstown Yellowjackets.
While the weather has been wonderful this past week for outdoor sports, the Lady Knights are starting to wind down their number of days played during the week in preparation for sectionals.

Tyler Consolidated was only in action on Wednesday and Saturday in the last week. In most cases, teams should be plenty rested. On the other hand, the Silver Knights fit in five games through those two days.

The first two games were played on Wednesday in a doubleheader against Williamstown as a result of a rainout earlier this season.

In the first game, Coach Charlene Galluzzo’s played fundamentally sound softball and received another solid performance from ace Kaitlyn Goudy who pitched a complete game shutout.

She became eligible for the win in the second inning when the Lady Knights plated two runs after Heather Suter and Kim Headley circled the bases. They added an insurance run in the bottom of the sixth after Suter scored again. She finished 2-2 with a triple.

Headley finished 1-2 with an RBI. Christy Jones also reached safely after a hit and Kim Kimble drove in a run as well.

Goudy shut down many of the Lady ‘Jackets batters, striking out nine in a full game of work while giving up only two bases on balls. She gave up only four hits in the win.

The nightcap was a much different story as some players were being rested for an eventually cancelled LKC placement game as well as the Parkersburg Invitational.

Williamstown, who served as the home team in game two because of an earlier rain-out, was able to take advantage and jump out to a 4-0 lead after one inning of play and a 6-0 lead past three.

The Lady Knights finally reached home with one run in each of the fourth and sixth innings, but it wouldn’t be enough as the Yellowjackets won 7-2.

Goudy once again went the distance striking out five. The two runs were scored by Hannah Thomas who went 2-3 from the plate and Sarah McMullen. Headley was responsible for one of them as she earned an RBI.

Saturday saw the Lady Knights travel to Vienna, the annual location for the state championships, for the Parkersburg High School tournament.

There the Silver Knights were placed in a two-pool round robin tournament. In their pool were state runner-up Ritchie County, Point Pleasant and St. Marys. Unfortunately, they would find themselves in the losing column each game.

Things initially looked positive as Tyler Consolidated were on the positive end of a 4-0 game with the Lady Rebels after two innings, but Ritchie County would catch fire through innings three and four, scoring nine runs.

In the bottom of the sixth, they would circle five to make the score 14-4 and enforce the mercy rule. Eight errors by the Silver Knights aided the Rebels.

Tyler Consolidated was limited to three hits on the bats of Jones, Thomas and Lauren Kennedy. Both Jones and Linda Buck were credited with RBIs. Goudy struck out six in the loss.

More troubles game as the Silver Knights were paired opposite of the Point Pleasant Lady Big Blacks.

Again the Knights were limited to three hits, this time from a 2-2 Jones and a double by Buck, in a 14-0 five-inning game.

A pitchers’ dual broke out in the third game of the season between St. Marys and Tyler Consolidated, a trend between the two LKC teams. This time the Lady Devils turned things around and were able to put the Knights on the losing end.

Lauren Kennedy took to the circle for the game and was able to go the distance with a strikeout.

St. Marys was able to generate a couple of runs in the first inning. It would be all they needed as their pitcher Channez Walker shut down the Lady Knights punching out three and giving up three hits.

Errors plagued the Knights in this game as well with six.

Senior night was scheduled for Monday, but was cancelled because of the weather. The Knights will now concentrate and set their sights on the double-elimination sectional match-up against Magnolia in New Martinsville on Friday. A third game will take place Saturday if needed.
